لأن الكائن البشري يتميز عن سائر الكائنات بإمتلاكه لملكة العقل والتفكر في ذاته وفي أبعاده الأخرى في الكون، يبقى الأمل قائماً في إستمرار التفكير وإعادة التفكير في الكينونة وفي زمنها المتحول.
من هنا يعود مؤلف الكتاب أسعد سليم البتديني إلى الفكر اليوناني للإنطلاق في طرح سؤال الأخلاق الإنسانية الكونية وفي إمكانها في ظل مخاضات مشروع العولمة والمشاريع المناهضة له، ومن هنا يبدأ السؤال: هل تستطيع الأخلاق نظرياً وعملياً أن تحجز لها مكاناً في هذا الزمن المتفجر؟...
هذا ما يحاول مؤلف الكتاب المساهمة في تحقيقه من خلال إعادة تسليط الضوء على الأخلاق الأرسطية عله يكتشف فيها ما يمكن أن يبقي جمرة الضمير الأخلاقي متوقدة تحت رماد المصالح الآنية الزائلة.
يقدم الكتاب قراءة نقدية لفلسفة أرسطو بالإستناد إلى مؤلفه الضخم "علم الأخلاق إلى نيقوماخوس" الذي يقارب الــ 700 صفحة والذي يعد من أنفس الكتب الأخلاقية في العالم، وقد وصل المؤلف من خلاله إلى نتيجة مؤداها "أن الأخلاق الأرسطية هي أخلاق سعادة لا أخلاق واجب "إفعل هذا لأنه يؤدي إلى سعادتك"، "وليس "إفعل هذا لأنه واجبك".
وفي سياق بحثه استطاع البرهنة "أن الفضيلة الاخلاقية، تتطلب إختياراً تأملياً وقصداً إدارياً يعني أنها تتطلب العقل" وبهذا المعنى يكون العقل اسمى المراتب، لذلك وجد المؤلف في الحياة العقلية (الحكمة النظرية) عند ارسطو، (حياة التأمل أسعد حياة)، وكانت الحياة العملية (الحكمة العملية) والفضائل الأخلاقية في المرتبة الثانية، إذ هي بمنزلة الوسيلة من الغاية.
