بعد روايتها "طفولة في عهدة أفعى" و"مرآة عشتروت" تضع نرمين الخنسا أمام القراء روايتها الجديدة، وفيها تنقد العادات والتقاليد والمفاهيم التي ما يزال بعضها متجذراً في مجتمعاتنا ومتحدراً إلينا من عهد الجاهلية السحيق. ونرى في أبطال روايتها شهوداً وضحايا لذلك المنطق الأخرق الذي يجد العظمة والخير والبركة في المجتمع الذكوري لا في المجتمع الأنثوي.
من الرواية نقتطف: "كثر القرع على باب منزلنا حين بلغت السادسة عشرة من عمري وكأن الجميع قد لمح وجودي فجأة.. وأصبحت وجه القمر المنير بعدنا كنت طول العمر جانبه المظلم، راح الكل يهتم لأمري الذي لم يكن ليشغل بال أحد، ابتسمت لي الثغور وامتدت لي الأيدي وتحسرن علي الكثير من قلوب النساء اللواتي كن يتذكرن فجأة أني أخت بالرضاعة لأولادهن الذين راحوا يراقبونني من على الشرفات ويلاحقونني بغية التقرب مني كلما رأوني أسير في الشارع أو أتبضع من محل ما".
