يثير مفهوم (الواجب) عدداً من الإشكالات، التي تتفرع عنها مشكلات أخلاقية عديدة، بعضها يرتبط بالفرد من حيث ذاتيته، وبعضها يرتبط به في نطاق علاقاته بالمجتمع بصفة عامة، لذا فإنه لا يوجد ما يدعو إلى الغرابة إذا ألفينا أنه في صميم إشكالات الواجب تبرز قيم أخرى مثل: المسؤولية والجزاء والعدالة والخير والجمال، فهي قيم مترابطة فيما بينها إلى درجة أن أي خلل يمس واحدة منها يؤثر لا محالة على البقية.
في هذا الكتاب يلامس محمد بهاوي بعضاً من إشكالات الواجب عن طريق إختيار وترجمة نصوص ذات علاقة به، وذلك من خلال الفصول والمحاور الآتية: في الفصل الأول يتم البحث عن معاني ودلالات المفهوم (الواجب)، وفي الفصل الثاني يتم إيراد نصوص تعالج مسألة أسس الواجب وقوته الإلزامية.
وفي الفصل الثالث: يتم إختيار نصوص تَطرُق مسألة في غاية الأهمية، وتتعلق بأصول القيم والواجبات الأخلاقية، وأما الفصل الرابع فقد خُصص لبيان العلاقة القائمة بين الواجب والحرية، بالنظر إلى كونهما عنصران لا يُمكن تحقيق الواحد منهما دون الأخذ في الإعتبار الآخر؛ ويأتي الفصل الخامس والأخير عبارة عن أقوال وإستشهادات لبعض الفلاسفة تعالج هي الأخرى مفهوم الواجب في علاقته بمفاهيم وقضايا أخرى.
وفي الكتاب نصوص مترجمة مقتبسة عن أصحابها أمثال: لالاند ومراد وهبة وكيركجارد وكانط ورسو وبيرجسون وأفلاطون وماكيافيلي وسارتر واينشاتين... وآخرون.
