يحتوي هذا الكتاب على دراسة مترجمة نقلها الدكتور "رزق سند" إلى العربية وذلك بعد أن اختارها من منشورات منظمة العمل الدولية. ويعتبر هذا الاختيار موقفاً إلى درجة كبيرة وذلك لغزارة الموضوعات التي يتناولها الكتاب والتي تتعلق بالتوتر بعلاقته بالحياة الحديثة، والفروق بين الأفراد في القابلية للتوتر نتيجة عوامل فسيكولوجية وراثية وتأثيرات بيئية.
كما تناول تأثير التوتر في الاستجابات الفسيولوجية والذي يؤدي استمراره إلى فترة طويلة إلى اضطرابات سيكوسوماتية تتمثل في القروح وضغط الدم وضعف عضلات القلب على سبيل المثال، وهذا ما تناوله الفصل الأول من الكتاب. أما الفصل الثاني فقد ربط فيه الكاتب التوتر بالحياة الصناعية وخاصة علاقته بالإنتاج بالجملة والأجر وفق الإنتاج بالقطعة وتأثير ذلك على الحياة النفسية للعاملين في المجال الصناعي. ولم يكتف هذا الفصل بذلك فقط بل امتد إلى رصد تأثير البيئة الفيزيقية وما تتضمنه من أقربة وغازات وسموم تمثل حملاً وعبئاً على الإنسان يؤدي إلى توتره، ونشأة الاضطرابات النفسية المهنية لديه.
وقد اضطلع الفصل الثالث بأساليب مقاومة التوتر والتغلب علية. كما واهتم الفصل الرابع بالعلاج وطرق الشفاء، أما الفصل الأخير فقد تناول بشكل مفصل طرق الوقاية من الوقوع في الأمراض المرتبطة بالتوتر من خلال وضوح الهدف، والديمقراطية والمعرفة الجديدة. ونقل هذا العمل إلى العربية جاء ليلبي حاجة كبيرة لدى الباحثين والمعالجين النفسيين وغيرهم، وهذا بالتالي ينعكس أثره على أعمالهم بإثرائها وتقديمها، إضافة إلى فائدته في نشر الوعي الثقافي عن هذا الموضوع مما يؤدي إلى خفض التوتر ليس فقط بين الفرد بل والشعوب والجماعات المختلفة مما يعمل على زيادة التفاهم بين الناس.
