إنّ كتابة السّيرة فنٌ من أهمّ فنون الكتابة التاريخيّة، وأكثرها براءةً وصدقاً وسلامة قصْد؛ بدأت في تاريخنا الثقافي كجُزءٍ مُتمّم لعلم الحديث؛ ثم ما عتّمتْ أن شبّت عن الطوق فخرجتْ عليه واستقلّتْ عنه، بحيث غدا عنوانُ كُتُبِ السّيَر والطبقات غيرَ عنوان كُتُبِ الرجال، ووُضعتْ عليها عشرات المُصنّفات، التي تتفاوتُ تفاوتاً كبيراً في موضوعاتها وأحجامها، ولكنها بمجموعها أدّتْ خدمةً كبيرةً للمكتبة التاريخية التي تُعني بسَرْدِ أحداث الماضي.
هذا الكتاب موسوعة للباحث الشيخ "جعفر المهاجر" يعني بالتاريخ الثقافي الإسلامي لأعلام من رجال الدين الشيعة؛ وإن ميزةَ هذا الكتاب أنه عمل على إستيعاب كلّ مَن يدخلون تحت عنوانه المُزدوج، "أعلام شيعة"، وذلك بعد أن وضع تعريفاً واضحاً ودقيقاً لكلا المفهومَين، ثم أنه يُلبّي، في متن الترجمة، حاجةَ من يبتغي معلوماتٍ سريعةٍ عمّن ترجم لهم، وفي الوقت نفسه يُلبّي حاجة الباحث الذي يبتغي التوسّع، إذ زوّده بثبتٍ بالمصادر التي أُخِذَ عنها، في السنّد الذي أورده في ذيل كل ترجمة.
