عرفت الصورة مآلا ومصيراً مذهلاً في الزمن المعاصر، وبدأت تتبوأ مكانة رفيعة، وتستقل تدريجياً بذاتها، وتنفرد بمعجمها الخاص، وتؤسس لغتها الخاصة بمعزل عن الخطاب، ومن شأن هذا التحول الهائل أن يطرح مشكلات فلسفية عميقة حَوْلَ وَضْعها ومكانتها في الثقافة المعاصرة.
إن الصورة تمثِّل لوحدها مشكلة فلسفية نظراً للتغييرات العميقة التي أحدثتها في تشكيل وتكييف ما هو بصري بصفة عامة، صار من الضروري إعادة النظر في الأدوات الفكرية والمنهجية من أجل تأسيس مقاربة فلسفة جديدة للغة البصرية، ووَجَبَ إستئناف النظر في كثير من المقولات الفكرية والجمالية من أجل فَكّ خَلْفيّات وأبعاد الصورة بفضل ما تحقّقَ لها من طفرات تكنولوجية ورقمية.
انتقلت الصورة من طَوْرٍ كانت فيه ذهنية إلى طوْرٍ صارت فيه بصرية، بمعنى أنها بعدما كانت في خدمة غايات روحية أصبحت تُحيلُ إلى ذاتها، إنها استحالت إلى وسيط أساسي في الثقافة المعاصرة، مما يُشرع الباب على مصراعيه أمام رهانات متعددة.
لقد أَشْكَلَت الصورة على الفكر المعاصر بسبب تعدُّد أنماطها، ويمكن صياغة بعض تلك الإشكاليات كما يلي: كيف يمكن التمييز بين الصورة الفنية والصورة بإعتبارها وسيطاً إشهارياً على سبيل المثال لا الحصر؟ كيف نتعرَّف على الكثافة الدلالية في الاولى ونميِّزها عن الصورة أحادية المعنى، وأنَّى لنا أَنْ نتغلّب على هذه الصعوبة عندما يتعلَّق الأمر بالشاشة وبالرابط؟...
تلك بعض الأسئلة التي يحاول هذا الكتاب الإجابة عنها.
