يعالج هذا الكتاب الرحلة العربية، بمعناها الجغرافي المحسوس وأفقها المعنوي النظري، وذلك منذ تكون معالمها الأولى مع بداية القرن التاسع عشر. وتحمل كلمة "الرحلة" تبعاً لذلك، معنى مزدوجاً: فهي تدل من جهة، على الانتقال العملي والتجول والسفر في قلب العالم الأوروبي، وترمز، من جهة أخرى، إلى الارتحال في اتجاه مفاهيم جديدة بغية إعادة ترتيب الحياة الاجتماعية، والشؤون العملية، وقضايا التنظيم السياسي، إضافة إلى الانبعاث الثقافي.
وتتناول الدراسة في قسمها الأول مفهوم الرحلة هذا عبر إعادة قراءة نصوص الرحلات العربية في أوروبا بدءاً بالطهطاوي، والشدياق، وانتهاءً ببيرم التونسي ومحمد عبده.
ويتطرق القسم الثاني إلى تحول الاهتمام العربي نحو الولايات المتحدة الأميركية وذلك مع نهاية الحرب العالمية الأولى وبروز الشعور بخيبة الأمل إزاء الممارسات الأوروبية ونكوص قادتها عن الوفاء بالوعود والالتزامات والتعهدات.
وتضمّ الدراسة وثيقة هامة حول هذا التحول من الإعجاب العربي بأوروبا وبداية صعود الولايات المتحدة الأميركية كنقطة جذب بديلة.
