باسيليوس الكبير، غريغوريوس النزينزي، وغريغوريوس النيصصي، أنهم الأعمدة الثلاثة الكبار الذين أرسوا أسس العقيدة المسيحية؛ كان في طليعتهم النيصصي، الفيلسوف اللاهوتي الذي تمرس بالفلسفة ودرسها على يد الوثني ليبانوس، ثم تأثر بأفلاطون، وبالفيلسوف الأسكندري أوريجانس، كان أستاذاً في علم البلاغة، ألمَّ في مجال الطب، والموسيقى، والعلوم الأخرى، أتمَّ هذه المعرفة الواسعة قبل أن ينصرف كلياً إلى حياة الدير.
من هنا، جاء الفكر الحديث يُقيِّم جدياً العمق والداخل لغريغوريوس النيصصي، محاولاً ان يكشف بتعمق وبطرقٍ دينامية حيوية عن مفتاح عقيدته، التي غالباً ما وُجدت كتاباته صعبة، أنه عميق جداً؛ هذا العمق يترجم القلق الذي يقود فكره اللاهوتي، والذي تجلّى حول فكرة: التعاون بين حرية عمل الإنسان، وعناية الله الخلاصية.
وكان هذا الكتاب الذي أنجزته ريشة لاهوتي بارع في دقة التحكم الكلي للفكر وتعابيره، رداً شاملاً على كل إعتراضات الفلاسفة الذين التقى بهم في القسطنطينية؛ وأيضاً، محاولاً تقييم السر المسيحي أمام "المتقدمين"، لهذا كان غريغوريوس نفسه يسميه "التعليم المسيحي" أي التثقيف الديني الذي كان هو هدف تعاليم المجمع الفلسطيني.
وكان هدف المترجم الرئيسي من وضع هذا الكتاب هو إعادة إحياء الإيمان المسيحي الذي تراخى كثيراً في عصرنا الحاضر، لأن شهوتي المال والسلطة استحوذتا على عقل الإنسان وأعمتا بصيرته، فباتت كل العلاقات الإنسانية محكومة بالمصالح الذاتية وتناسى الإنسان أن الله خلقه فقط لكثرة محبته وحنانه، وأن عليه تمجيده على الدوام.
