في مجموعته القصصية "كاتب الديوان" يبدو سؤال الكتابة هاجس الروائي "خليل حشلاف" الأول، وهو نفسه السؤال الذي أرق كتَاب كثيرون غيره، ولكن تبقى التجربة الصادقة الشرط الضروري للإبداع وما يتمخض عن التجربة يشكل بالضرورة نصَاً ابداعياً.
يستهل كاتب الديوان عمله بخطاب يومئ به إلى القارئ: "كانت يداي تضغطان على قصاصة سودتها بمشاعر ما تفتأ تساورني، كنت قد افتتحا بالماذا وأنهيتها باللست أدري فالأسئلة نشرت خواطري في صحارى كلما توغلت فيها شعرت بضحالتها... لقد أحالتني إلى إنسان مليء بالاستفهامات. قلت لنفسي: إن صياغة الحياة شيء مزعج وتساءلت لماذا؟ لأن الحياةنفسها فقدت سهيتها، والمجتمع؟...".
إذاً الكتابة إجابة مفتوحة لأسئلة عدة، يطرحها خليل حشلاف عبر مقطوعات نثرية أقرب إلى خلجات الروح، وتداعيات الأنا التي تجسد الواقع من حيث هو وعي ممكن، ولنكتشف عند قراءته رؤيته السردية بعد تضافر معظم تقنيات السرد، من رواة وشخصيات وأزمنة وأمكنة وأحداث، تتماهى وتتقاطع أحياناً أخرى ولكنها تبقى معبرة عن أفكاره ورؤاه. وهي من الأمور المشروعة في الفن الروائي.
