بين الجغرافيا والتاريخ صلة قوية، وهذا ما جعلني أقرأ هذا الكتاب قراءة متأنية فاحصة، تليق بالكتاب ومؤلفه الدكتور بركات النمر، الباحث الجاد والمتخصص في الجغرافيا البشرية بشكل عام، وجغرافيا الجريمة بشكل خاص.
وبما أن الجريمة ظاهرة إجتماعية إنسانية، موغلة في القدم، فإنه كان لا بد أن تدرس، للبحث عن كنهها، وعن العوامل المؤدية إليها، ونتائجها التي تمتد من الفرد إلى أن تصل إلى المجتمع المحلي، ولتنتقل بالتأثير إلى المجتمع الإنساني، فالجريمة لا تعترف بالحدود، ولذلك ظهر علم الإجرام ليقوم بدراسة هذه الظاهرة بمساعدة مختلف العلوم لينهض بهذه المهمة ومن بين هذه العلوم علم الأجرام الكارتوجرافي (Cartographic Criminology) الذي يخدم جغرافية الجريمة وبخاصة الجغرافيا الجناية في المساعدة على تفسير الظاهرة الإجرامية ورصدها جيداً من وجهة النظر الجغرافية والمرتبط بالجريمة مكانياً، وقد ذكر مؤلف الكتاب أن: "الجريمة ما هي إلا وجه من وجوه العلاقة المكانية بين الأفراد وبيئتهم...".
وقد تناول المؤلف الجاد الدكتور بركات النمر موضوع الجريمة في كتابه من كافة جوانبها في مقدمات كتابه، ثم انتقل إليها في الأردن خلال فترة الدراسة، فقد تناول المؤلف الخصائص الجغرافية والديموغرافية لظاهرة الجريمة، مع ربطها بعامل السكان، والبيئة، والحضارة، والنواحي الإجتماعية والسياسية والإدارية، مع الأخذ بعين الإعتبار موقع الأردن بين الدول المجاورة، والتأثر بالمحيط من النواحي العسكرية والسياسية والإجتماعية والديموغرافية، إلا أن سيطرة الامن وكفاءة جهاز الشرطة في الأردن حدت من هذه الظاهرة بشكل ملحوظ إلى عام 1990 عندما بدأت بالزيادة، للأسباب التي توصلت إليها الدراسة، ومن أهمها إرتفاع تكاليف المعيشة وإنتشار البطالة، كما يعد هذ الكتاب الأول في موضوعه على المستوى المحلي على حد عملي، وهذا يعطيه ميزة خاصة تضاف إلى أهميته في الميدان الأكاديمي.
