تحاول هذه المادة البحثية التي بين أيدينا، والتي أعدت في الأصل كمحاضرات ألقاها المؤلف على طلاب دبلوم الدراسات العليا في التاريخ في الجامعة اللبنانية، تحاول دراسة التاريخ البشري بالوقوف على طبيعة القوانين السببية التي تدخل في حركة الصيرورة التاريخية وتحولها في المكان والزمان من حالة إلى أخرى.
وتكمن أهمية هذه الدراسة في تكوين ثقافة بنائية لدى القارىء العربي يستطيع معها أن يمتلك رؤية علمية تساعده على فهم العلاقة بين الماضي والحاضر، وبالتالي إمكانية الربط بين ما ضيه الحديث وفعله في المستقبل، إنها إمكانية تؤسس لفهم مسبق "للمستقبلية" لا على أساس التنبؤات التنجيمية وإنما على أساس علم موضوعي هو علم الاحتمالات المرتكز إلى قوننه الظاهرة برصدٍ دقيق لحركة سيرها في الواقع.
وبشكل عام تقوم الدراسة على محورين متلازمين: الأول: محور نظري يتناول النظريات الفكرية الرئيسية التي ظهرت في التاريخ، والتي تحاول أن تجسد تفسيراً للظاهرة أو للظواهر التاريخية من خلال اعتمادها لفرضيات محددة، والثاني: محور نظري -تطبيقي يقوم على مقارنة النظرية الخاصة بمدرسة من المدارس الفكرية المعروفة مع الحالة أو الحالات التي عرفتها الظاهرة في صيرورتها.
