من الصعب تحديد اللّحظة الَّتي بدأت فيها العملية التاريخية لميلاد الدولة الإسلاميّة، لأنّها سيرورة تاريخيّة، وعمليات البناء في التاريخ تكون نتيجة حركات مترابطة ومتعاقبة بنواحٍ معينة، ومتفاعلة بنواحٍ أخرى، إلاّ أنّ هذا الكتاب يبدأ من السنة الثامنة للهجرة (630م)، ففي هذه السنة نجد أن الحركة الإسلاميّة بقيادة النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم قد حازت على عناصر قوة واضحة، تسمح هذه العناصر بتأسيس الدولة، حيث سيرورة ميلاد الدولة الإسلامية استغرقت مدة خلافة أبي بكر كلها، أما سيرورة إكتمالها فإنها أخذت مرحلة زمنيةً أطول، والكتاب يقف عند مرحلة ميلاد الدولة أما المراحل الأخرى لها: مراحل الإكتمال، ثم الإنهيار، فتحتاج إلى دراسات مستقلة.
إنّ الشخصية الكبرى في المرحلة قيد البحث هي شخصية أبي بَكْر، والذي يعود إنتصاره لاحقاً إلى قدرته على التمييز بين الجانب الديني (أو السمّة النبويّة الظاهريّة)، والجانب السياسي (أو الفحوى الإجتماعيّ لحركة الإسلام) في ممارسات الحركة الإسلاميّة في عهد مُحَمَّدٍ، وإتباعه منهجاً سِيَاسيّاً عسكرياً (دنيوياً) محضاً من أجل تحقيق أهداف الحركة الإسلاميّة، وإن كان قد أطر مسلكه في إطار دينيٍّ، ولهذا اقترن الدِّينِ بالسياسيّة في ممارسة قادة الإسلام الأوائل.
"قد لا يسعنا تحميل أحدٍ بعينه مسئولية الفكر ذي الطبيعة الارتدادية بشقيه العلماني والسلفيّ؛ فإذا كان الإنسان المعاصر في الغرب لم يفلح في القضاء على المسلك الديني على الرغم من الدرجة التي بلغتها عملية نزع القدسية عن العالم في ثقافته، فكيف بإنسان يعيش في بنية ثقافية ـ اجتماعية ـ سياسية ـ اقتصادية متقادمة، لم تتمكن من تجاوز نفسها، ولم تمت لتفسح المجال للجديد، كيف لهذا الإنسان ـ المفكر اليساري، والعلماني أن ينتج ثقافة تتجاوز أطره؟".
