يدرس هذا الكتاب الشخصية التي ربما كانت هي الأكبر خطراً في تاريخ الإسلام المبكر، فابتداءً من نسب عمر بن الخطاب وطبعه ومحيطه الثقافي وروايات إسلامه، يمضي المؤلف إلى تقري علاقة الخليفة الثاني بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وبالخليفة الأول، ويحلل شخصية عمر الحاكم والمشرع والمجتهد وصولاً إلى اغتياله وصوره اللاتاريخية سواء في الأمثلة أم في نقيضها. ونظراً لما هي شخصية عمر عليه، فإن هذا الكتاب هو أيضاً محاولة لفهم نشأة الإسلام وتطوره، بقدر ما هو سيرة ذلك الرجل الذي جاءت روايات إسلامه في سور، وكانت له مواقف من موت محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، كما كانت له مواقف من المرأة ومن المقدس.. وليس هذا الكتاب، على أية حال سوى محاولة تفسير، ورؤية لا تدعي أنها نهائية بقدر ما تؤكد على ملامسة الحقيقة التاريخية.
