أضاء "كتاب الأرواح" مرحلة حاسمة في الإرتقاء البشري، مرحلة نضوج الإنسان عقلياً وروحياً، ورغم أن الثقافة العصرية قللت من قيمة الكتاب، بمقتضى المفترضات الدينية، فإنه يندمج تاريخياً في مساق تطورنا الثقافي.
طيلة قرن كامل، قرأ هذا الكتاب الأرواحيون وحاربه اللاأرواحيون، ولم يفلت من محرقة المحاكم الدينية في ميدان عام.
نُشر الكتاب لأول مرة في باريس في يوم 18 إبريل سنة 1857، وظهرت الطبعة الثانية والنهائية، في ذات المدينة، في 16 مارس سنة 1860. بين هاتين الطبعتين، تطورت الحركة الأرواحية في فرنسا وفي العالم، وفي المدة نفسها، ظهرت منظمات أرواحية عديدة، ومنشورات مخصصة تتناول تعاليم الأرواح في العالم كله، لقد بدأ العهد الأرواحي.
و"كتاب الأرواح" هو أول كتاب يسلك مجرى فلسفياً جديداً هو (الدراسة النقدية للعقائد). غرضه الأساسي هو الإرتقاء، وطبيعة هذا الإرتقاء جدلية، خدمة للعقول التي تريد النور.
أعاد الكتاب وحدة المعارف على نحو وثيق بحيث يتوافق الإيمان مع العقل، ويبرز كلاهما الهيكل الثلاثي الأركان، الذي يكوّن المذهب الأرواحي، العلم والفلسفة والدين.
