يعتبر التنظيم والتقيّد بالقوانين من المباني الأساسية للحياة الإجتماعية، ويمكننا القول إنّ الحياة الإجتماعية لا يمكنها أن تستمر من دون التقيّد ومراعاة القوانين، بل إنّ الميزان في المدنية والتمدن في أي مجتمع مرتبط بشكل مباشر بحكم القانون والتقيّد بالقوانين من قبل أفراد تلك المجتمع.
وفي الدين الإسلامي، الذي هو دين القانون - تمّ التأكيد على رعاية مصالح نظام الحياة الفردية والإجتماعية، وقد بلغت أهمية حفظ النظم في الإسلام إلى درجة أنّه لا يسمح بالإخلال به بأي شكل كان، فلو كان إجراء حكم من أحكام الإسلام يتسبب في الإخلال بالنظم فإنه يتوقف العمل بهذا الحكم.
وقد حازت مسألة حفظ النظام على أهمية خاصة في سيرة الأئمة المعصومين: فهذا أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه وفي آخر لحظات حياته المباركة يوصي أبناءه بمراعات النظم فيقول: (أوصيكم بتقوى الله ونظم أمركم).
