يتناول هذا الكتاب أحداث وأنشطة الـ كي.جي. بي. السوفياتية، والتي كانت ساحتها (ايران)، وذلك في الفترة الممتدة من عام 1977 إلى عام 1982م. وأهمية الكتاب تكمن في كونه وثيقة صادقة يقدمها من عايش الأحداث مراقباً لها ومشتركاً في كثير منها في آنٍ معاً، ونقصد به مؤلف الكتاب (فلاديمير كوز يشكن) الذي ينقل عبر صفحات هذا الكتاب يجربته الخاصة بالتزامن مع ما كان يجري في إيران وداخل الاتحاد السوفياتي، وفي الوقت نفسه في أفغانستان وفي الشرق الأوسط في تلك الفترة من الزمن.
وفلاديمير كوز يشكن هذا ضابط في الـ كي. جي. بي. فرَ من السفارة السوفياتية في طهران عام 1982 متجهاً إلى الحدود التركية طالباً اللجوء السياسي. وجعبته مليئة بأسرار الجهاز الغامضة، هذه الجعبة تحتوي على قصص أغرب من الخيال لعالم الجاسوسية. ومنها محاولة اغتيال البابا يوحنا بولس الثاني عام 1984، والمواجهة بين المخابرات السوفياتية وجهاز "السافاك" السري الموالي للشاه وغيرها.
لقد كتب كوز يشكن الكثير عن تصرفات الـ كي. جي. بي. ووسائلهم الشاذة وانتحالهم الشخصيات. كما أنه كشف أسراراً عن محاولة الـ كي. جي. بي. لاغتيال الشاه، وكذلك تخطيط وتنفيذ الاعتداء على القصر الرئاسي في كابول، الأمر الذي حرَض الشوفيات على اجتياح افغانستان.
ما يميز الكتاب أنه يكشف عن منظمة هدفها مساعدة الحزب الشيوعي والحكومة في ذلك الوقت في ملاحقة الفساد الذي عمَ أوساط ممثليها في طهران كرئيس الوفد التجاري والسفير وغيرهم. كما أنه يعرض الملف الاجرامي خلال آخر سنوات حكم (ليونيد بريجينيف) الذي شهد فصول تقهقر العملاق السوفياتي
