إن المرحلة التي تصدى لها المؤلف لمعالجة وقائعها في إطار العلاقات الإيرانية - السوفيتية شهدت حدثين مصيرين حملا في طياتهما تحولا نوعياً في النظام القائم في كلا البلدين، ونقصد بهما ثورة اكتوبر في روسيا، وسقوط النظام القاجاري في إيران، وقد تركا إنعكاساً واضحاً على طبيعة العلاقات القائمة بينهما، وبإتجاه لم يخل من ظواهر جديدة تؤلف تجربة جديرة بالدراسات والتمعن.
إلا أن الموروث في علاقات البلدين ظل يتحكم إلى حد واضح في الإفرازات الجديدة، وعلى مدى سنوات طوال من عهد رضا بهلوي، مما اقتضى وقفة خاصة لا بإعتبارها مجرد تمهيد ضروري إلى طلب الموضوع حسب، بل أيضاً، وهذا هو الأهم بالنسبة لموضوع الكتاب بالتحديد، لأن معظم احداث تلك العلاقات في مرحلتها الجديدة ظلت مرتبطة إلى حد كبير بذلك الموروث الذي ظل متجسداً في العديد من الوثائق والمذكرات والتصريحات الإيرانية والسوفيتية التي تعود إلى العقدين الثالث والرابع من القرن العشرين.
