ثمة قدر ساخر شاء أن يصدر هذا الكتاب، الذي يروي قضة النشاط الخارجي لجهاز الاستخبارات السوفياتية KGB وأسلافه MGB, NKVD, GPU, Tcheka، في الوقت الذي تنهار فيه الأنظمة الشيوعية ذات النمط السوفياتي.
اليوم يبدو جهاز الـKGB كواحة ثبات وجمود في قلب صحراء المجتمع السوفياتي المضطرب والهائج... وهو بعيد، كل البعد، عن النعاني التي تحملها كلمتا "بريسترويكا" و"غلاسنوست"، وما زالت وثائقه حتى اليوم، تعتبر من المحرمات -تابو- في العالم، لا يمكن مسه، ولهذا السبب، امتلك هذا الكتاب مصداقية و"فائدة" لا مثيل لهما. وذلك بفضل الأبحاث التي أجراها في الغرب كريستوفر أندرو، من جامعة كمبردج، مضافة إلى الاعترافات والدلائل التي قدمها غورديفسكي، رئيس دائرة الـ KGB في الغرب.
والجدير بالذكر أن غورديفسكي شكل، بين عامي 1974 و1985، عنصر اختراق داخل الـ KGB لصالح المخابرات البريطانية. إن هذا الكتاب هو حدث بحد ذاته.
