الشعر عند حسن النّواب كائن حيّ يتنفس ويشعر ويمتد على مساحات أحزانه العالية. فالنص في "مراسيم شعرية" ينضح بالوجع والألم والأنين، وبهذا المعنى تكون الكتابة الشعرية عند شاعرنا هماً حياتياً ويومياً، وقد انسلت عبر صيغ فنية متنوعة في مشهدية صورية فنتازية حيناً، وواقعية حيناً، لتحيل خزين الشاعر الذاكروي إلى بنية مأهولة بالمعاني الكبيرة، ولتشكل أيضاً خطاباً واقعياً ورؤوياً متخماً بشعرية ممتلئة بحريق العراق ووجعه والذي لا يعرّفه إلاّ من خَبِرَه. يقول الشاعر في قصيدة بعنوان: "لم نكن وحدنا": لم نكن وحدنا، كان ثالثنا الألم، ورابعنا العناد، وخامسنا الحنين، وسادسنا الجحيم، وعاشرنا كان الأمل، لم نكن وحدنا...، أيها الوطن".
أما "زوجة الشاعر" فلها من الشعر حصّة في مشهدٍ يحمل حشوداً هائلة من الجمال والدلالة، وقد أهداها هذه القصيدة "حين عرفت زوجتي، سأقرأ شعراً هنا، وضعت يدها على قلبها، وقالت: ربما...، ترى شاعرة، وتتزوجها، وتنساني، اللغنة، على الشعر، وعلى من ابتكره أيضاً، ولذا جاءت معي إلى القاعة، ليست لأنها تحب شعري، وإنما لتراقبني، حتى لا أقترب من شاعرة جميلة، إنها جالسة هناك، في ركن القاعة، وهي غاضبة الآن".
قسّم الشاعر مجموعته إلى ست مجاميع شعرية جاءت في الكتاب تحت العناوين الآتية: 1-قصائد بمذاق الرماد، 2-قصائد على منصة الإعدام، 3-مثلث العروج، 4-قصائد ناجية من شهوة النار، 5-رباعية العاشق، 6-سباعية الجحيم.
