كان صوته كموجة النسيم الخضراء التي تنبعث من صفحة نهر النيل. والآه التي كان يطلقها من جراح قلبه كانت تتردد أصداؤها من قمة جبل صنين حتى قمم الأهرام. لقد عاش حياته أغنية، والعود الذي كان بين يديه كان صدره.. كان مغنياً يحتضن صدره، وأوتار هذا العود لم تكن غير شرايينه و عروقه.
الجرح الأول في قلبه كان حينما ماتت شقيقته روحه ودمه أسمهان. ومنذ ذلك الوقت بدأ النزيف. والبلبل الذي كان يدق بجناحه الصغير نوافذ بيوت الوطن العربي يحمل الأغنية في منقاره زنبقة ووردة وخيط نسيم يموت الآن. يموت بعد أن جعل الحياة حلوة وجميلة للناس، وجعل موسيقى الحياة تفرض أنغامها على الهواء العربي.
وكأنه كان يحس باقتراب اللحظة الأخيرة فكتب مذكراته هذه التي كانت جزءاً لا يتجزأ من تاريخ الأغنية والموسيقى العربية، دفع بها إلى المحرر الفني لمجلة الأسبوع العربي الذي سلمها بدوره لنا في دار الجماهير.
