ابتسم الحظ لفريد فألحقته بديعة مصابني بفرقتها كعازف عود مع التخت الشرقي الذي يصاحب المطرب إبراهيم حمودة أثناء الغناء في برنامج كازينو بديعة، وأظهر فريد نبوغاً واستعداداً لفت نظر بديعة فقررت أن تقدمه كمطرب على أن يغني في الليالي التي يتخلف فيها إبراهيم حمودة عن الغناء وكان هذا اليوم عندما غاب إبراهيم حمودة، وغنى فريد الأطرش، وكان الحظ بانتظاره.
في هذا الكتاب يسرد محمد رفعت المحامي مسيرة فريد الأطرش الفنية، منذ تلك اللحظات إلى أن لمعت شهرته فأبدع غناء وتلحيناً حيث يتحدث عن رحلة كفاحه المريرة، ثم عن ألحانه التي كانت عنده كالولادة، ليجيب عن التساؤلات حول عدم زواج فريد، ومن ثم ينتقل للحديث عن ذكرياته مع عبد الوهاب ومع عبد الحليم والمعركة التي نشبت بينهما وحكايته مع الملكة ومع سامية جمال وغير ذلك من الاسرار التي يكشفها عن فريد الأطرش وذكرياته ليخصص الجزء الأخير لأغانيه التي يرفقها بالنوتات الموسيقية.
