عندما ألف المصنف النعمان بن محمد سيرة المعزّ لدين الله، رأى وجوهاً من الحكم والعلم والآداب والمعرفة تنفجر عن منطقه وتندفع من ألفاظه وتشير عن رمزه وإشاراته، ولا تجري مجرى السير التي صنفها. فرأى إفراد ذلك في هذا الكتاب مما سمعه من المعزّ من حكمة وفائدة وعلم ومعرفة، عن مذاكرة في مجلس أو مقام أو مسايرة، وما تأدى إليه من ذلك عن بلاغ أو توقيع أو مكاتبة، على تأدية المعنى دون اللفظ، حقيقة بلا زيادة ولا نقص.
وقد أُخرج هذا الكتاب بحلة محققة الهدف منها التعريف أولاً بمكانة المؤلف في المذهب الشيعي وعند الخلفاء الأربعة الأولين، وثانياً لكشف النقاب عن عمق تفكير هذا الرجل الذي كان قاضي الفاطميين الأول وفقيههم بدون منازع، رغم ما يظهر من تواضعه واستظلاله بظلّ الأئمة في كامل مؤلفاته، ولا سيما الكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته (المجالس والمسايرات) وثالثاً لإحياء هذا الكتاب الذي انتظره الدارسون طويلاً، لما فيه من تسجيل يوميّ لأقوال المعزّ وأفعاله، حتى لكأنه سيرة مفصلة لهذه الخليفة الفاطمي العظيم.
