تعتبر الجغرافيا الطبية أحد فروع الجغرافيا البشرية الحديثة والتي تهتم بصحة الإنسان لما للإنسان من علاقة وثيقة بالأرض، وكذلك تبحث بعلاقة العوامل الجغرافية الطبيعية والبشرية بالحالة المرضية وتهتم بدراسة الأنماط المكانية للأمراض وإنتشارها وتدرس أيضاً التوزيع المكاني للخدمات الصحية، وكذلك بالتحليل المكاني للصحة والمرض.
لمفهوم الجغرافيا الطبية عدد من المعاني التي تختلف بإختلاف المستخدمين له.
ويقسم هذا العلم إلى عدة فروع من بينها: أ-جغرافيا الخدمات والتي تبحث في التوزيع المكاني للخدمات وإمكانية الوصول إليها، ومن خلال دراسة الخدمات الصحية المتاحة يمكن التعرف على مدى العدالة في توزيع الخدمات الصحية المتاحة للسكان، ب-أنها تهتم بجغرافية الأمراض التي تدرس الأمراض المتوطئة من حيث العدد سواء كانت قليلة أم كثيرة.
كما تبرز الجغرافيا الطبية العلاقة الوثيقة بين البيئة وإنتشار الأمراض، وتحديد مواطن هذه الأمراض، ومسببات إنتشارها، ومعرفة العوامل الجغرافية المؤثرة فيها سواء من الناحية الطبيعية أو البشرية.
ولذلك، فإن تحديد نوعية الأمراض ومدى توزعها أمر حيوي جداً، لتحديد متطلبات كل منطقة جغرافية من الخدمات الطبية، سواءً كانت مستشفيات أو مراكز صحية يستطيع المريض الوصول إليها بكل يسر وسهولة.
