مؤلف هذا الكتاب هو محمد بن مكرم بن علي، أبو الفضل، جمال الدّين، ابن منظور الأنصاري الرويفعي الإفريقي، ترك بخطّه نحو خمسمئة مجلّد، قال ابن حجر: كان مغرى بإختصار كتب الأدب المطوّلة، وقال الصفدي: لا أعرف في كتب الأدب شيئاً إلا وقد اختصره، أشهر كتبه "لسان العرب"، جمع فيه أمّهات كتب اللّغة، فكاد يغني عنها جميعاً.
يقول ابن منظور في مقدمة هذا المخطوط: "... وبعد، فإنّي طالعت كتاب "التذكرة" تأليف الشّيخ الإمام أبي عبد الله محمد بن الحسن بن محمد بن حمدون، ولقد أجاد في ترتيبه وجمعه الفنون المحاسن، فاخترت منه ما هو الأحسن، وإن كان فيما لفظته جيّد وحسن، وتركته على أبوابه وفصوله، وحذفت منه ما لا حاجة إليه من زوائده وفضوله، ورتّبته خمسين باباً، كلّ باب في فنّ يجمع فصولاً متقاربة ومعاني متناسبة، ليقرب على متصفحه ما يريد مطالعته بمعرفة مكانه... وإبتدأته بالمواعظ والآداب الدينية، وختمته بالأدعيّة المرويّة... وسمّيته "المنتخب والمختار في النوادر والأشعار".
