يقول الإمام حجة الإسلام أبي حامد الغزالي بأن العبادة ثمرة العلم، وفائدة العمر، وهي سبيل السعادة، ومنهاج الجنة، وهي طريق وعرة، كثيرة العقبات، والعبد ضعيف، والزمان صعب، وأمر الدين متراجع، والفراغ قليل، والشغل كثير، والعمر القصير وفي العمل تقصير، والأجل قريب، والسفير بعيد، والطاعة هي الزاد، فلا بد منها، ممن ظفر بها فقد فاز وسعد أبد الآبدين، ومن فاته ذلك خسر مع الخاسرين وهلك مع الهالكين. فصار هذا الخطب مفصلاً، والخطر عظيماً، فلذلك عز من يقصد هذا الطريق، ثم عزت القاصدين من يسلكه، ثم عز من السالكين من يصل إلى المقصود ويظفر بالمطلوب، وهم الأعزة الذين اصطفاهم الله عز وجل لمعرفته ومحبته، وسددهم بتوفيقه وعصمته، ثم أوصلهم إلى رضوانه وجنته، ولما وجد الإمام الغزالي بأن طريق العبادة بهذه الصفة، كان لا بد له من بيان العقبات التي تعترض مسال تلك الطريق، والتي يجد الحاصل من الجملة سبع عقبات الأولى عقبة العلم، الثانية عقبة التوبة، الثالثة عقبة العوائق، الرابعة عقبة العوارض، الخامسة عقبة البواعث، السادسة عقبة الترواح، السابعة عقبة الحمد والشكر، وقد تتبع الإمام الغزالي هذه العقبات بشرح موجز اللفظ، مشتمل على النكت المقصودة من هذا الشأن، كل منها في باب مفرد.
بين يدينا كتاب في التزكية والتصوف والسلوك، عرض فيه المصنف للأمور التي ينبغي أن يلتزمها العابد لكي يصل إلى الأمل المرجو وهو الجنة . حيث تكلم عن العلم والتوبة، والعوائق، وتكلم عن الخلق والنفس، والشيطان، ومراعاة العين والأذن واللسان والقلب، وحفظ البطن والرزق والتوكل،والإحتياط، والحمد والشكر والصبر وأمور أخرى.
