القرآن الكريم والسنة النبوية ينحوان مناحي كلام العرب في وجوه البيان، وفي كلام العرب ما يفهم المراد منه بمجرد سماعه. ومنه ما يدع السامع في حاجة إلى التدبر وإعمال الروية في تفهم مآله. وكذلك الكتاب والسنة، فمن أبى التأويل فيهما مطلقاً فهو متحجر الدماغ جامد خامد، ومن توخى التأويل في الجميع فهو قرمطي هالك، وأهل الحق يرون الأخذ بالظاهر في محله، والتعويل على التأويل في موضعه، والتأويل هو بيان مآل ما يحتاج إلى التدبر من القول، وتبين ما يؤول إليه الكلام، وهذا معنى التأويل في أصل اللغة، وأما استعماله بمعنى صرف الكلام عن معناه الظاهر فاصطلاح محدث. والخاضعون في بحث التأويل طوائف على أنحاء شتى من تفريط أو إفراط أو توسط. وقد شرح الإمام حجة الإسلام الغزالي أحوال هؤلاء الطوائف في كتابه "القانون الكلي في التأويل" أجلى شرح حيث تناول التأويل ببحث لسؤال وجه إليه، وقام فيه بوصايا لمن يعاني هذا الموضوع قيام خبير بما هنالك، وألم إلماماً بمسالكهم، وعين ما هو الصواب منها، وحقق بحث التأويل الذي شغل أمر تحقيقه الطوائف حتى شفى غله الباحث بما حواه من فوائد ثمينة، وهو على صغر حجمه خير دليل لمن يريد سلوك تلك المضايق، يدله على المنهج الأسلم، وخير حرز يحرسه من الوقوع في المالك إذا أخذ بوصاياه، كيف وقد قل نظير مؤلفه بين علماء الإسلام في معاناة المطالب العالية من علم أصول الدين، والتصوف، والفلسفة، فبيان مثله يكون أوقع في النفوس وأرضى في القلوب. ولا سيما أن تأليفه هذا من أوامر مؤلفاته.
