الغزالي عملاق الفكر الإسلامي بلا منازع. وَعَى علوم الدنيا والدين، فتجاوز سابقيه فهو الفقيه الأصولي والمتكلم الذي حرس العقيدة ودافع عنها، فأظهر الحق الذي حاول المبتدعة تحريفه، وهو الفيلسوف، وكتابه "تهافت الفلاسفة" خير دليل على عظمته في هذا الميدان، وقد ألفه رداً على الفلاسفة القدماء، مبيناً تهافت عقيدتهم وتناقص كلمتهم فيما يتعلق بالإلهيات، وكاشفاً عن غوائل مذهبهم وعوراته، والذي دفعه إلى تأليف هذا الكتاب ما رآه من وجود طائفة من الفلاسفة والنظار المسلمين الذين يعتقدون في أنفسهم التميز عن الأتراب والنظراء، فرفضوا وظائف الإسلام من العبادات، واستحقروا شعائر الدين من وظائف الصلوات والتوقي عن المحظورات، فاستهانوا بتعبدات الشرع وحدوده. وهم فيما وصلوا إليه متفقون مع الشرع على الإيمان بالأصلين الرئيسيين: الإيمان بالله واليوم الآخر، وإنما اختلافهم في الفروع فقط.
إن الغرض الذي ابتغاه الغزالي من تأليفه لهذا الكتاب لم يكن سوى التنبيه إلى أوجه تناقض الفلاسفة في العلوم الإلهية "وما يتعلق النزاع فيه بأصل من أصول الدين كالقول في حدوث العالم وصفات الصانع وبيان حشر الأبدان" فقد أنكر الفلاسفة هذه الأصول، مما دعا الغزالي إلى الاعتراض عليهم دون أن يدخل طرفاً للانتصار لمذهب دون الآخر وإنما عمد إلى تكدير مذهبهم ورفض وجوه أدلتهم بما يبين تهافتهم. ويحدد الغزالي تناقضات الفلاسفة في علومهم الإلهية والطبيعة في عشرين مسألة تتمحور جميعها حول ثلاثة مواضيع رئيسية هي: الله، العالم، والنفس.
بعد أن ألف الغزالي " مقاصد الفلاسفة " شرح فيها أقوال الفلاسفة خاصة ابن سينا والفارابي، ألف هذا الكتاب ليبين المسائل التي ليس الخلاف فيها بين العقيدة الإسلامية والفلسفة لفظيا بل ما يسبب بدعة أو كفرا، وقد ناقش عشرين مسألة مثل أزلية العالم وأبديته والاستدلال على وجود الله وعلمه سبحانه بجميع الجزئيات وخرق العادات وفناء النفوس البشرية وبعث الأجساد وغيرها. واعتبر العلماء هذا الكتاب ضربة قاضية لاستكبار الفلاسفة وادعائهم التوصل إلى الحقيقة في المسائل الغيبية بعقولهم، وهو تراث فلسفي عظيم فضلا عن أنه تراث بقلم حجة الإسلام الغزالي
