شهد الثلث الأخير من القرن العشرين وبداية العقد الأول من القرن الواحد والعشرين بروز ظاهرة فكرية مهمة ألقت بظلالها على خارطة الفكر العربي والإسلامي المعاصر، ونعني بهذه الظاهرة ما يمكن أن نصطلح عليه بــ"الفكر الإسلامي الغربي"، وهو ذلك التفكير الذي ظهر في الغرب ممثلاً في مجموعة من الشخصيات الفكرية البارزة التي اعتنقت الإسلام عقيدة وثقافة وإيديولوجيا.
ولا شك أن غارودي يبرز كواحد من أبرز الشخصيات التي تمثل هذا الإتجاه الإسلامي في الفكر الغربي، بالنظر إلى الجدل الكبير الذي أثاره في الوسط الثقافي الغربي أولاً، وفي الوسط الثقافي الإسلامي ثانياً، فقد انقلب على الماركسيين ونعتهم بالتحريفيين والأورثوذكسيين لأنهم أفرغوا الماركسية من بعدها الإنساني الذي عبر عنه ماركس، وهو ما جعله يخوض معارك فكرية ساخنة مع بعض قاعدة الحزب الشيوعي الفرنسي ومفكريه على غرار لوي ألتوسير وغيره من المفكرين الماركسيين وقد انتهى هذا الصراع بطرد غارودي من الحزب الشيوعي الفرنسي، وقبل ذلك، كان قد وجه نقداً مماثلاً للمسيحية التي كانت أول المذاهب الفكرية والدينية التي اعتنقها، قبل أن يرتد عليها، وقد امتد هذا الجدل إلى الساحة الإسلامية عقب دخوله الإسلام، فرحب به البعض واعتبر دخوله إنجازاً ومكسباً كبيراً للإسلام والمسلمين، في حين رفض البعض الآخر ذلك، فشككوا في صحة إسلامه، خاصة وأن الرجل دخل الإسلام تحت إغراء التصوف الإسلامي، علماً بأن التصوف لا يحظى بإجماع المفكرين المسلمين.
وبالنظر إلى ما سبق، يحاول المؤلف في هذه الدراسة تسليط الضوء على مسيرة الرجل الفكرية، ومشروعه الفكري الذي ناضل من أجله، وموقف الفكر العربي والإسلامي منه.
