هذا الكتاب كما يقول المؤلف يعود إلى فكرة نشأت في رحاب إحدى المجلات المتخصصة حيث قدم المؤلف دراسة وتحليلاً لواقع التيارات الإيديولوجية المتصارعة على الحلبة في بيروت آنذاك. وقد تمحور عدد المجلة على العالم الفكري الاختلافي لمجموعة من الأساتذة في الجامعة إذ إن لكل رجل منهم تيار أو إيديولوجيا. وقد نما هذا البحث متشعباً لتأتي ثماره في هذا الكتاب الذي أراده المؤلف أن يخصصه للعوالم الفكرية المتناقشة بالقلم ثم بالسلاح.
كما أراد أن يكون التحليل منصبأً على حالات عينية ومفردة وليس على عموميات ونظريات. وقد أدخل المؤلف في وقت لاحق تعديلات على أفكار وأدخل إضافات وتعديلات منهجية وتغييرات.
وسيظهر لقارئ الكتاب أن الميول العدوانية عنيفة بحدتها وعمقها، فالشدة في الكراهية المتبادلة تاريخية الجذور، عريقة وليس القلم في ذلك سوى أداة قتالية. فقد قدم المؤلف "عمر فروخ" عينة تمثل تياراً معتبراً دور الرجل وسلوكاته تعبيرات عن رغبة جماعية واعية. فهنا يظهر ممثل مؤسسة أفرزت رجالاتها ونظمت أفكارها وترجمت طموحاتها المرتكزة على تاريخ طويل.
وترد في هذا الكتاب شخصيات كثيرة تتقدم على المسرح بصدد بسط رأي أو دحض آخر، فمثلاً سيكون عبد الله العلايلي بطلاً أو شخصية أولى في المجرى العام فهو ممثل لتيار متمرد متشدد لكنه تشدد يقع في أقصى الطرف الثاني من العقل الواحد عينه. إضافة إلى أسماء أخرى مثل زكي نقاش.
