التطبيب عن بعد مصطلح شاع استخدامه في تسعينات القرن العشرين وهو يعني إمكانية تقديم خدمات طبية عن بعد لمرضى موجودين في مناطق نائية عبر استخدام الحواسيب وما يتوفر من تقانات المعلوماتية الحديثة كالتواصل الفعال بالصوت والصورة وهذا المجال يعد حصيلة لتظافر جهود العلماء من مختلف الاختصاصات. ويعكس مدى التأثير الذي تحدثه الأبعاد الاقتصادية والثقافية والاجتماعية والطبية المرافقة لشبكات المعلومات الرقمية على نوعية الخدمات الصحية المقدمة للمرضى. وهذه التقنية يمكنها أن تساهم في تحسين نوعية الخدمات الصحية المقدمة وتحقق مبدأ العدالة في الحصول عليها وبكلفة منخفضة نوعاً ما.
والكتاب الذي نحن بصدده يهدف إلى بناء فهم مشترك للأمور الأساسية بين الأشخاص والمهنيين على اختلاف ثقافاتهم ويلبي حاجة الأشخاص المهتمين والمهنيين العاملين في إنشاء شبكات التطبيب والرعاية الصحية عد بعد. يقع الكتاب في اثني عشر فصلاً، يتضمن الفصل الأول تعريفات التطبيب والرعاية ويقدم نبذة تاريخية لتطور هذا الحقل. ويبين الفصل الثاني وجهة نظر المرضى الذين يستفيدون من هذه الخدمات. بينما يتناول في الفص الثالث علاقة الأطباء مع مرضاهم. وفي الفصلين الرابع والخامس يتناول موضوع اعتماد الرعاية الصحية من بعد من جميع جوانبها ثم يعرض في الفصل السادس للاعتبارات التنظيمية والتشريعية والسياسية في الرعاية الصحية وفي الفصل السابع يتحدث مؤلفو عن سوق خدمات الرعاية الصحية في حين يبحث في الفصل الثامن موضوع التعاقدات في خدمات الرعاية الصحية عن بعد وفي الفصول التاسع والعاشر وإحدى عشر يبحث في العمل بالرعاية الصحية عن بعد، وإدارة برامج الصحية عن بعد قبل أن يختتم في بحث التأثيرات الهامة على العناية الصحية ذات الفعالية في مستقبل الرعاية الصحية عن بعد.
