لقد وجد سبينوزا نفسه في وسط يهودي محافظ، ونشأ بين أكناف العائلة والجماعة التي كانت أقلية وقتئذ في هولندا، وتربى تربية دينية أطهر فيها علامات الحصافة والنبوغ، لا سيما من خلال المناقشات والمحاججات التي كان يجريها بين يدي أساتذته.
درس التلمود والتوراة، ودرس فلاسفة اليهود أمثال موسى بن ميمون وابن عزرا وبعض علماء اللاهوت اليهودي.
لقد تزاوج عطش المعرفة في عقل سبينوزا مع توقد العقل، فكان أكبر من أن تضمه طائفة أو أن يحتويه مذهب، لقد طالع سبينوزا أهم النتاج الفلسفي في عصره: فقد قرأ فلسفة كل من فرانسيس، توماس هوبز، رينيه ديكارت.
إلا أنه خص هذا الأخير بالعناية والإهتمام حتى أنه عُدّ من الديكارتيين حاله في ذلك حالُ عدد من معاصريه من الفلاسفة أمثال نيقولا مالبرانش وغوتفريد لابيتز، كانت قراءات سبينوزا وآراؤه تثير قلق الأوساط الدينية اليهودية المحافظة حتى ضاقت به بعد أن رفض كل محاولات الإغراء، فكانت فتوى الطرد والنبذ واللعنات التي أصدرها الكنيس اليهودي بامستردام في مواجهته في عام 1656، واستتبع هذا الطرد طرداً آخر وهو طرد من العائلة والحرمان من الميراث.
وكان من الجرأة بمكان ان تجاوز تلك الأعتاب مطبقاً المنهج النقدي والقراءة التاريخية على الكتابات الدينية المقدسة، متخففاً مما قد يبطّئ خطاه في سبيل الحقيقة.
