إن أحق العلوم بالتعلم، وأولاها بالتحفظ هو علم البلاغة، ومعرفة الفصاحة إذ أن صاحب العربية إذا أخلّ بطلبه، وفرط في التماسه، لم يعد قادراً أن يفرق بين كلام جيد وآخر رديء، ولفظ حسن، وآخر قبيح، وهو أيضاً إذا أراد أن يصنع قصيدة، أو ينشئ رسالة، وقد فاته هذا العلم، مزج الصفو بالكدر، وخلط الغرر بالعرر.
لهذا جاءت فكرة تأليف هذا الكتاب الذي اشتمل على جميع ما يحتاج إليه في صنعة الكلام نثره ونظمه، ويستعمل في محلوله ومعقوده، من غير تقصير وإخلال وإسهاب وإهذار. وقد جعله المؤلف عشرة أبواب مشتملة على ثلاثة وخمسين فصلاً.
الباب الأول في الإبانة عن موضوع البلاغة في أصل اللغة وما يجري معه من تصرف لفظها وذكر حدودها وشرح وجوهها وضرب الأمثلة في كل نوع منها وتفسير ما جاء عن العلماء فيها. الباب الثاني في تمييز الكلام جيده من رديّه. الباب الثالث في معرفة صفة الكلام. الباب الرابع في البيان عن حسن السبك وجودة الوصف. الباب الخامس في ذكر الإيجاز والإطناب. الباب السادس في حسن الأخذ وقحبه وجودته وردائته. الباب السابع القول في التشبيه. الباب الثامن في ذكر السجع والازدواج. الباب التاسع في شرح البديع والإبانة عن وجوهه وحصر أبوابه وفنونه. الباب العاشر في ذكر مقاطع الكلام ومبادئه والقول في الإساءة في ذلك والإحسان فيه.
