يعدّ كتاب ديوان المعاني من أحسن الكتب التي دوّنها الإمام اللغوي الأديب أبي هلال العسكري. وفيه جمع أبلغ ما جاء في كل فن وأبدع ما روي في كل نوع من أعلام المعاني وأعيانها إلى عواديها وشذاذها. وتخير من ذلك ما كان جيد النظم محكم الصف غير مهلهل، رخو ولا متجعد فج، وهذا نوع من الكلام لا يزال الأديب يسأل عنه في المجالس الحافلة والمشاهد الجامعة. والذي حدا بالمصنف على جمع هذا النوع أنه لم يجد فيه كتاباً مؤلفاً ولا كلاماً مصنفاً يجمع فنونه ويحوي ضروبه؛ وجعله في اثني عشر باباً: الباب الأول في التهاني والمديح والافتخار. الباب الثاني في الخصال. الباب الثالث في المعاتبات والهجاء والاعتذار. الباب الرابع في الغزل وأوصاف الحسان. الباب الخامس في ذكر النار والطبخ وأنواع الطعام وصفات الشراب وما يجري مع ذلك. الباب السادس في ذكر السماء والنجوم والشمس والقمر. السابع في ذكر السحاب والمطر والثلوج والمياه وصفات البساتين والرياض والأشجار والثمار والرياحين والنسيم وما يجري مع ذلك. الباب الثامن في ذكر السلاح والحرب وما يشبه ذلك. الباب التاسع في ذكر القلم والخط والكتاب وصفة البلاغة... الباب العاشر في ذكر الخيل والإبل والسير والفلوات والسراب وصفة سائر الحيوانات. الباب الحادي عشر في ذكر الشباب والمشيب والعلل والموت والمراثي والتعازي والزهد. الباب الثاني عشر في صفات أشياء مختلفة.
