تنوعت المادة التاريخية في كتاب السير، الذي لم يكن مجرد توثيق لأعلام الإباضية ومشيختها مثلما أراد ذلك مؤلفه، في حقبة شهدت تراجعاً لإتباع المذهب، إنما أضحى مصدراً أساسياً للدراسات التاريخية والحضارية والفكرية في مشرق البلاد ومغربها.
اعتمد أبو العباس أحمد الشماخي في كتابه على مصادر إباضية عديدة متنوعة، في الفقه وعلم الجدل، أو في التاريخ والسير، كما أورد عدة أخبار مأخوذة من كتب أهل السنة وغيرها من المذاهب، مثل: تاريخ الأئمة الرستميين لابن الصغير ومروج الذهب للمسعودي إضافة إلى المصادر الشفوية.
في الجزء الأول يتناول الحقبة التأسيسية لتاريخ الإسلام، مشفوعاً بتراجم أعلام الإباضية في المشرق، وقد قدم رؤية مميزة للأحداث التاريخية الهامة، جديرة بالإطلاع عليها.
أما الجزء الثاني فقد خصص لتراجك علماء الإباضية وقادتهم في المغرب، وتقرع إلى قسمين: في الأول: تناول تاريخ نشر المذهب في المغرب والأئمة الرستميين، وفي الثاني: سير مشائخ الإباضية في المغرب.
وتكتسي مادته أهمية فائقة في التاريخ الثقافي والاجتماعي والاقتصادي والسياسي لبلاد المغرب في العصر الوسيط.
وخصص الجزء الثالث لوضع الفهارس، والترجمة لمئات الأعلام من المشرق والمغرب، من البصرة وعمان ومصر وإفريقية على حد سواء، والتعريف بالقرى والقصور والمدن والقبائل المشرقية والمغربية، وكذلك التعريف بعشرات المصنفات الوارد ذكرها في الكتاب.
هذا الكتاب هو حصيلة جهد متواصل تارة ومتقطع طوراً لسنوات عديدة، راوح فيه العمل بين مسارب التحقيق والترجمة للأعلام والأماكن والتعريف بالمؤلفات وبين محاولة الحصول على أهم المصادر من المكتبات الخاصة ومواكبة الدراسات الإباضية، بعد أن شهدت السنوات الأخيرة طفرة جديدة في هذا المجال.
