إنّ ولادة شكل جديد من التفكير يعكس بجلاء نشاط الأفراد والمدارس والمؤسّسات العلمية والصالونات الثقافيّة المشهورة التي تداولت مُثُلاً أخرى وتعاطتْ مع منظومات قيميّة جديدة.
لقد تاق هذا القرن لمسايرة التطوّر المشهود في جميع نواحي العلم والمعرفة والإرتقاء بالتاريخ إرتقاءً يليق بأهميّته ودوره في حياة الشعوب والحضارات، وهذا بواسطة مؤرّخي هذه الفترة وفلاسفتها الكبار.
وهذا الكلام ينسحب على الفيلسوف الإيطالي بندتو كروتشه Benedetto Croce الذي يَدين في كتاباته بشكلٍ كبيرٍ إلى هذه المرحلة الحاسمة من التاريخ، فقد تميّزت القضايا الفلسفيّة والفكريّة التي طرحها بالعمق والأصالة والطرافة، بعدما ساهمت الأحداث التاريخيّة مساهمة فعّالة في بلورة فكره وتصوّره للواقع والحياة، لا سيّما وأنّ مساهماته الفكريّة الهامّة ظهرت في النصف الأوّل من القرن العشرين بأحداثه الضخمة على أكثر من صعيد.
لقد عاصر كروتشه كبار المؤرّخين والفلاسفة وتداول نصوصهم الفكريّة وأبدى وجهة نظره في الكثير من القضايا التي طرحوها، فالرجل إلى جانب كونه فيلسوفاً مُقتدراً، كان أيضاً مؤرّخاً مرموقاً لإيطاليا وأوروبا في القرن العشرين.
انتهى التصوّر الفلسفي بكروتشه إلى مذهبه المسمّى بــ "النزعة التاريخيّة المطلقة" الذي تقوم عليه شهرته، ويقف هذا المذهب الفكري دليلاً على أسس فلسفته، فلقد اكتملت صياغة هذه النظريّة عام 1939 أي في مؤلفات كروتشه المتأخّرة، فهل كان هذا التصوّر الفلسفي نتاجاً لتطوّر حتّمي قاد إلى تسمية فلسفته لاحقاً بــ "النزعة التاريخيّة المطلقة" أم أنّه جرى الإعداد مُسبقاً للوصول إلى مثل هذا الطرح، وفي هذه الحالة تصبح "النزعة التاريخية المطلقة" مشروع بحث فلسفيّ بدأه كروتشه عام 1893 في مؤلّفاته المبكّرة ليَسْتكْمل بناءه عام 1939 في مقال له بعنوان "مفهوم الفلسفة بوصفها نزعة تاريخية مطلقة".
وهو النصّ حاسم في نعت فلسفة كروتشه وفي تصنيفها، ففي ذات المقال يَعْتبر "فلسفة الروح" هي الواقع، والفلسفة بوصفها علماً للروح، والتاريخ هو جوهر الفلسفة.
