لا يزال موضوع المرأة في الكتابات الكلاسيكيّة بوجه عام، وفي أعمال الفلاسفة بوجه خاص، يثير نقاشًا وجدلاً واسعًا لا يهدأ في الثقافة المعاصرة. فقد تصدّت جملة من البحوث والدراسات الأكاديمية، في مجالات شتّى من الفكر والمعرفة، إلى نصوص المفكرين والفلاسفة الكلاسيكيّين، في محاولة منها لتقصّي الحقيقة الإنسانيّة الغابة في هذه النصوص- التي تعدّ ذكورية بامتياز- وفحص شكل تعاطي القدماء مع موضوع مكانة المرأة السياسية والاجتماعية والفكرية في المنظومة الاجتماعيّة القديمة. فقد بات من الضروري في الزمن الراهن، استنطاق تلك المرحلة التاريخيّة، لإعادة كتابة التاريخ بشكل موضوعي وغير منحاز، ولتصحيح الكثير من الأخطاء والمغالطات التي كرّستها تلك النصوص القديمة على مدى قرون طويلة من الزّمن. ولعلّ من افدح أخطائها استبعاد النساء من حقل الممارسة والنشاط بوجه عام، متحججة بمسوغات بائسة، وتبريرات عنصرية تحالفت مع القوانين السائدة لإبقاء قطاع كبير ومهم من المجتمع في العتمة. بات إذن استدعاء النصوص القديمة وفحصها مسألة علميّة ملحّة، لكونها شوّهت بعض الحقائق، ولم تُمِط اللثام عن كثير من القضايا المطروحة في عصرها، وغضّت الطرف عنها في كثير من الأحيان، بما يتّفق مع مصالح وأيديولوجيات تدعم، بشكل صريح، المنظومة السياسية أو القانونية أو التربوية القائمة، سعيا منها إلى بسط سلطانها ونفوذها على المجتمع.
