تعد الذات أهم مصدر للتجارب الشعرية في القديم والحديث، إذ كان الشعراء يستلهمونها في نصوصهم الشعرية، فتنعكس فيها آمالهم وآلامهم وأحلامهم وإحباطاتهم، وقد كان ذلك سبباً في تفاعل المتلقي معها، إذ إنه كان يجد فيها انعكاساً لمشاعره الذاتية، إذ إن ذاتيتها لم تكن تعني انعزالها عن الآخرين، فهموم كل فرد لا بد أن يشاركه فيها غيره.
وهذا الكتاب يضم مجموعة من الدراسات تشكّل الذات محوراً لها. فأما المبحث الأول فيدور حول (الذات في لحظة صدق)؛ وهو يتناول نمطاً غير مألوف في الشعر العربي القديم، إذ أقف فيه على نصوص شعرية يتخلّى فيها الشعراء عن الصورة المعتادة التي سادت في أشعارهم، إذ كانوا يعبرون فيها عن الاعتزاز بذواتهم. ذلك أنهم في هذه النصوص الفريدة يعمدون إلى الاعتراف بأخطاء هذه الذات ويعبرون عن ندمهم على ذلك. وقد حاولت أن أرصد البواعث التي كانت تدفع الشعراء إلى مثل هذا النمط من التعبير.
وأما المبعث الثاني؛ فهو يكشف عن (الذات في لحظة دفاع)، وقد وقفت فيه على أنموذج شعري ظهر في شعرنا القديم، كان الشعراء يستدعونه في مواقف معينة، ليجعلوا منه مدخلاً للدفاع عن ذواتهم إزاء موقف الآخرين منها وهذا ما يتمثّل في أنموذج (الساخرة). وقد سعت الدراسة إلى رصد تلك المواقف التي تستدعي هذا الأنموذج، وطريقة الدفاع عن ذواتهم في كل منها، كما حاولت تفسير سبب اختيار هذا الأنموذج.
