خيال الظل فن من الفنون الشعبية، عماده عدة فنون كوّنته أو تداخلت في بنيته، فنسب إليها، أو صنف ضمنها، أول هذه الفنون: الأدب، موضوعاً وأسلوباً، وإليه ينتمي النص القائم عليه العرض أو المخطط له، شفوياً أو كتابياً، معداً أو مرتجلاً، فصيحاً أو عامياً، شعراً ونثراً.
وبالنظر إلى الطبيعة الحوارية السائدة في هذا النص، فقد صنف خيال الظل نوعاً من الأنواع المسرحية. وثاني هذه الفنون هو فن الدمى، تشكيلياً وتطبيقياً في آن واحد، وهو منحدر من فنون النحت ومتصل بها باستمرار. أما ثالث هذه الفنون فهو الرسم، فطرياً شعبياً، أو نمنمة أو رسماً بالقص، ويتصل بفني الدمى والرسم، تصميم الشخوص وتكوينها وقصها وتأليف مساحة العرض في خيال الظل. ثم يأتي الفن الرابع وهو التمثيل غير المباشر، إذ تؤدي عروض بعض أنواع خيال الظل رسوماً أو دمى متحركة آلياً أو يدوياً.
وفاروق سعد في كتابه "خيال الظل العربي" يدخل القارئ في عالم هذا الفن الرائع بتداعياته ليشكل كتابه إضافة واتجاهاً في البحث الفني: إذ يعالج الفن المقارن ضمن الفن الواحد الجامع بين عدة فنون. ويتناوله، بمنهجية المقارنة، في أنواعه الفنية، وتقنياته، وموضوعاته ونماذج هذه الموضوعات وشخصياتها، وعلى هذا الأساس، فقد عالج الكتاب فن خيال الظل العربي كفن مكوّن من عدة فنون وتناوله بأنواعه المختلفة، وتقنياته المتنوعة، وموضوعاته المتشعبة، ونماذجه الدالة، وذلك من جميع جوانبه التراثية والتاريخية، والجغرافية والأدبية، والمسرحية والتشكيلية والموسيقية.
