تكمن أهمية دراسة النظام السياسي في اليمن، من أهمية اليمن سكانا وموقعاً وإمكانيات، فسكان اليمن اليوم يزيدون عن 27 مليون نسمة، وهم شعب فتي في معظمه، فضلاً عن الموقع الإستراتيجي لليمن الذي يتحكم بمضيق باب المندب، عن طريق جزيرة ميون، وبالتالي يسيطر على طرق الملاحة البحرية القادمة من المحيط الهندي إلى البحر المتوسط، بالإضافة إلى أهمية ميناء عدن الذي يقع في قلب خطوط المواصلات العالمية مع سواحل يزيد طولها عن 2200 كم في البحر الأحمر وبحر العرب.
فضلاً عن الإمكانيات الإقتصادية الكثيرة الواعدة، سواءً عبر الثروات المعدنية والنفط والغاز وكذلك الثروة السمكية الهائلة إلى جانب الزراعة والسياحة.
كما إن النظام السياسي في اليمن، شهد إنتقالاً مفاجئاً في القرن العشرين، من تجربة أكثر من أربعة عقود من العزلة والتخلف خلال حكم الأئمة، إلى أشكال مختلفة من النظام السياسي الجمهوري، والذي جاء عبر الإنقلابات العسكرية، وأخذ يطور نفسه تدريجياً عبر الإنفتاح على محيطه العربي والإقليمي والدولي، وحقق نجاحات كان في مقدمتها تحديث اليمن بدرجات متفاوقة، فضلاً عن تحقيق الوحدة عبر إندماج شطري اليمن عام 1990، بطريق سلمية وممارسة التعددية السياسية التي سبق بها اليمن دولاً عربية كثيرة بإستثناء لبنان.
