وقد لعب الغزالي إلى أحد أعمدة الفكر الإسلامي بأفكاره الفقهية السياسية دوراً كبيراً في التاريخ السياسي الإسلامي عند المسلمين، لقد كان استقرار العقيدة السنية ومزجها بالتصوف مما امتاز به الغزالي كمفكر وكبطل ديني ومصلح وداعية سياسي، وهو أنه حرر الإسلام من العوائق التي كانت تقيد روحه وبعث فيه حياة جديدة، فقد كان له سهمه الكبير في مجال الفقه وتنظيم أمور الدولة وإحياء السنة الكريمة من خلال الدور الذي لعبه في العالم الإسلامي أجمع بانتشار الدعوة السنية من خلال دور المدارس النظامية داخل حدود الدولة وخارجها وأمام الدعوات المباينة لها. واستطاع الغزالي بفضل فكره وتأثيره ومكانته السامية أن يكون لفكره السياسي آنذاك السيادة في كل العالم الإسلامي وخاصة في المشرق الإسلامي.
