"...هو الآن غارق وسط حلبة الرقص، وسعاد، ذات الوجه المستدير، والعينين الحالمتين تتفرس بوجهه، وهو الآن يمسك بيديه خصرها اللين، الناعم، به شوق كبير لأن يقول أي شيء، كلمة، همسة عابرة، ولكن اللعنة، كل اللعنة على الكلمات، ها هي جامدة، منتظرة أن يهمس بأية كلمة، مهما تكن، قنبلة أو مفاجأة، ولكنه ليس مثل محمود متسرعاً، ولم يكن في يوم من الأيام متسرعاً في اتخاذ القرارات، حاسماً، وليس أكثر من ذلك راحة للنفس، وهوي فكر أن محمود الآن يغفو على أمل كبير، وربما يطارده شبح يوسف حتى النهاية، مثلما طارده شبح مها وزوجها الممتلئ بالسمنة في بداية عمله في المجلة، والآن هل تهدأ الصيحة ويستكين محمود، ويغدو حاله حال المتزوجين. النوم مبكراً، والجلوس مبكراً في الصباح، للذهاب إلى العمل بكل جدية ونشاط، أم تراه سيتمرد على كل شيء ويعود من جديد ذلك العابث الذي لا يعرف ماذا يريد. وماذا يجب عليه أن يفعل؟ وليس ثمة أحد يمكنه معرفة شيء من هذا، أو التكهن به، ولكن من الممكن الآن، خلال الأيام القريبة، أن يكون الحوار معه مجدياً في كل شيء، وسيكون أكثر قرباً من تنظيمات الحزب، بدون شك، سيهدأ بعض الشيء، وسيكون الخراب الجميل جميلاً بحق، ويصبح من الضروري إدخال عناصر جديدة، ومن الجائز أن يكون هذا في رواية قادمة.
