يشكل المكان بكل خصوصيته عالماً ومختبراً لصنع كل أحداث النص المترسب من ذاكرة ومن بيت مخيلة القاص معيض عبد الله في جديده القصصي (فراغ المكان). فالمكان بقدر ما يبرز الإختلاف الغرابة سيعلن عن حالات نفسية متراكمة كما هو الأمر في نص (أنفاس الورد) إحدى قصص المجموعة. يقول السارد: "كانا يلتقيان في زوايا طرقات القرية المعتمة عند كل مساء. يتهامسان ... يتعانقان ... تحفهما رائحة القهوة المنبعثة من بين شقوق جدران البيوت العتيقة (...) لم يدع لهما الزمن خيار البقاء معاً .. فقد عبث بأحلامهما وفرّق بين قلبيهما ...". إنها لعبة التكرار ضمن متوالية المكان والحدث والموقف، أجاد القاص تصويرها وتمثيل عمق الضعف الإنساني وعدم قدرته على تغيير ما سيكون، وعلى هذا الدرب تسير قصص المجموعة وتتفتح على أسئلة موجعة تبرز الشرح النفسي والإنشطار وهي بتوازياتها المتناقضة أحياناً ترصد عوالم من المتقابلات اللغوية الدالة؛ الحرب والحب، اللقاء والفراق، الحياة والفناء، وتمرر خطابات واقعية وكأنها تضع الملح فوق الجرح لتنزف حقائقه المغيبة، وهذه هي راسلة الأدب ...
يضم الكتاب سبعة عشر نصاً وقصة قصيرة جاءت تحت العنايون الآتية: "بداية" ، "مجهول" ، "البرد" ، "أنفاس الورد" ، "ما الذي حدث" ، "صور قديمة" ، "فكرة" ، "الليل القاتل" ، "الدخان الأسود" (...) وقصص أخرى.
