ولدت فكرة صفوة الشروح من رحم حاجة ماسة لكتاب يجمع لقارئ نهج البلاغة الشروح، ويقدم له زبدة المخاض بأسلوب سهل يسير، فجاء صفوة الشروح ليأخذ على عاتقه هذه المهمة، ويختصر لقارئ النهج مسافة طويلة ويوفر له وقتاً ثميناً كان يقتضيه في التجوال بين شروح النهج باحثاً عما يروي غليله في شرح عبارة من عباراته، أو تفسير كلمة من كلماته، فيقدم صفوة الشروح للقارئ عبارة مصطفاة من شروح ثلاثة، هي: شرح ابن أبي الحديد المعتزلة، شرح الشيخ محمد عبده، شرح الدكتور صبحي الصالح، أما عن طريقة الكتاب فقد سعة في لعدم إرهاق القارئ بالرموز وتقديم العبارة الملفقة من عبارات الشرح الثلاث كعبارة واحدة ومنسجمة فيما بينها.
