يتألف هذا الكتاب من 31 باباً. مواضيعها مكملة أو مفصلة لما كتبه المؤلف كتابه الآخر: (نظرات في التربية الروحية). أيّ أنها موضحة لأهم المفاهيم المتعلقة بالسلوك. ومن بينها إزاحة الالتباسات الكثيرة المتعلقة بالفهم الصحيح لحقيقة التربية الروحية العرفانية ومناهج ومراحل الترقي فيها وغاياتها. وكذلك الشعائر التعبدية الصحيحة في مقابل الطقوس الزائفة، وفضح أدعياء المشيخة والدجالين بتحديد الدونر المنوط بشيخ التربية الحقيقي وعلاماته؛ ومن ذلك بيان مدى الفرق بين مقامات أولياء الله العارفين أهل الجمع والوجود والشهود المتحققين بلباب المحكمة الربانية، وبين ما هم عليه أهل الرياضات النفسية. وضرورة التمييز الواضح بين المجالين النفسي والروحي. وفي هذا الكتاب وصفة حقيقية تمكن من رصد النماذج الدجالية للمتظاهرين بالتربية وأصحاب الدعاوى الباطلة أو الواهمة؛ وفيه أيضاً بحوث في غاية العمق كالفرق بين الوجهتين الشعائرية والأخلاقية، وعلاقات الروح بالجسم، ومعنى العروج والتحقق بالكمال العرفاني. ثم الرجوع إلى الخلق بالحق وعلاقته بالتضحية. ومن جانب آخرن يعتبر هذان الكتابان بحق-كغالب كتب الشيخ عبد الواحد الأخرى-من أنفس ما ألف كمدخل لعلم مقارنة الأديان الأصيل، وبالأخص العرفان الصوفي المقارن.
