أديب وروائي وقاص وناقد وباحث ومؤرخ وصحافي ومترجم لبناني.
له مساهمات عديدة في حقلي الأدب والنقد، إذ بلغت مؤلفاته 62 كتاباً موزعة بين الترجمة والنقد والرواية.
جميل جبر يعدّ رائد التيار الوجودي في الرواية المعاصرة، ومع هذا لم ينصرف إلى العمل الروائي وحده، بل أضاف اليه فنوناً أدبية أخرى، في طليعتها البحث والدراسة .
أصدر سلسلة كتب بعنوان (أعلام الأدب اللبناني المعاصر).
ومن الذين درسهم جميل جبر في هذه السلسلة جبران خليل جبران وميخائيل نعيمة وأمين الريحاني وإيليا أبو ماضي وعمر فاخوري وتوفيق يوسف عواد وسعيد تقي الدين وأمين نخلة وعبد الله العلايلي ومي زيادة وآخرون غيرهم.
من مؤلفاته: "جبران خليل جبران في حياته العاصفة"، "مي في حياتها المضطربة"، "أبو شبكة شاعر الحب"، "شارل قرم شاعر الجيل الملهم"، "قصة حب أغرب من الخيال بين مي وجبران"، وله دراسات اخرى عن الجاحظ وعن المنفلوطي.
على أن جميل جبر لم يحصر نشاطه الفكري والأدبي بتأليف الكتب لا غير، فقد شارك في تأسيس جمعيات ثقافية، كما شارك في تأسيس مجلات.
شارك في تأسيس "جمعية أهل القلم" اللبنانية التي كانت أول اتحاد لأدباء لبنان، والتي دعت إلى أول مؤتمر للأدباء العرب عقد في مدينة دبي، كما شارك في تأسيس "جمعية أصدقاء الكتاب" سنة 1959م، وهي جمعية ضمت نفراً من كبار الأدباء والمفكرين وكانت تمنح جوائز مالية لنخبة من الأدباء اللبنانيين تقديراً لمؤلفاتهم في ميادين الرواية والبحث والفلسفة والتاريخ والشعر التي تميزت بالجودة والأصالة والابتكار، وقد شارك أيضاً في تأسيس "المجلس الثقافي للمتن الشمالي".
وكما امتهن الأدب، امتهن الصحافة الأدبية والسياسية ايضاً، فكان رئيساً لتحرير مجلة (الحكمة) الثقافية بين عامي 1959و1967م وقد تميزت (الحكمة) في تلك الفترة بمواضيعها ودراساتها ونقدها العقلاني والموضوعي، وكانت إلى جانب زميلاتها (الآداب) و(الأديب) و(الطريق)، و(الثقافة الوطنية) منارة أدبية تصدر من عاصمة كانت مرادفة لحرية الرأي والكلمة.
