لعل أحد لم يشتهر كما اشتهر أبو عثمان عمرو بن بحر الجاحظ. ولعله لم يعرف كاتب في العربية لاقت مؤلفاته من واسع الشهرة وفائق الذيوع ما لاقت كتب الجاحظ على كثرتها وتنوع المقاصد والأغراض فيها.
وفي هذا الكتاب (أدب الجاحظ وفلسفته) يقدم المحقق دراسة لسيرة الجاحظ وآرائه الكلامية ومؤلفاته عرضاً لنوادره ومواقفه من الفرق الإسلامية. وهو يتضمن أربعة كتب أو رسائل هي: (فلسفة المعاد والمعاش- كتمان السر وحفظ اللسان- فلسفة الجد والهزل- فلسفة فصل ما بين العداوة والحسد).
وهو يفرد في الكتاب قسماً خاصاً يتناول فيه ناحية من نواحيه ويبين ما له وما علي. ويفصل منهج الجاحظ في الأدب ويعرف مذهبه في الاعتزال ومسلكه في العلم والفلسفة.
لقد اختار المؤلف طائفة ممتازة من رسائل الجاحظ ومقالاته ومروياته المنبثة في مؤلفاته المنشورة وغير المنشورة. وقد أعمل فيها قلمه مصححاً فاسدها ومقوماً معوجها محرراً ما شاع فيها من تصحيف النساخ وقد اعتمد في ذلك على المصادر المذكورة في آخر هذا الكتاب وعلى غيرها من المطالعات وعلى ما استنتجه من مؤلفات الجاحظ.
