شكّل التصوف رحلة روحية في الفكر العربي الإسلامي، حرّكت مياهه الراكدة، وقدّم دفقاً غزيراً من المرونة للروح فخفف من جفاف الفقه، ولم يقتصر تأثيره على الفكر الديني، بل تعداه إلى اللغة وفنون القول والخطاب، وذلك بسبب الإنزياح الدلالي الكبير والواسع الطيف لمفرداته وصولاً إلى الرمز، كما خلق التصوف فضاءات جديدة للروح لتحلق في عالم اللانهاية والتبصر في الماوراء، فأنتج رؤى هائلة المدى لم يسبق لمخيلة أن تجاوزته، وفتح آفاقاً جديدة للمخيلة كي تبني عوالم من الرؤى والأفكار.
إلا أن التصوف وصل في نهاية المطاف، ونتيجة لاستبعاده العقل، بل واحتقاره أحياناً، إلى استنفاذ موضوعه. فالتصوف الذي أقرّ بحرية التجربة الذوقية واعترف بأصالتها، انتهى مع الإنحدار العام في المجتمع العربي الإسلامي إلى ما آلت له مجمل الأوضاع وعلى المستويات جميعها. وساد التسليم الأعمى للشيخ الذي أدى العصمة الكلية، وغشّت جمهور التابعين مقولة: "لم يعد بالإمكان أفضل مما كان" لتناظر مقولة السلفيين "الأسلاف لم يتركوا شيئاً للأخلاف"، فجفّت المخيلة واستسلموا لأدعياء زيفوا التصوف بوضع قواعد وقيود هي نقيض طبيعته القائمة على التجربة الحية والفعل والحرية. ألا يؤكد ذلك حاجتنا الملحة إلى نهضة فكرية وألق روحي بلا حدود؟
