سامي زبيدة (ولد في 1937) هو عالم اجتماع ومؤلف عراقي يعمل أستاذًا لعلم الاجتماع السياسي في كلية بيركبك، جامعة لندن.[1] كتب عددًا من المؤلفات، وتغطي كتاباته مواضيع الدين وإثنية والقومية والثقافة والسياسة في الشرق الأوسط.

من مؤلفاته: أنثروبولوجيات الإسلام الإسلام: الدولة والمجتمع القانون والقوة في العالم الإسلامي الثقافة الجماهيرية، الثقافة الشعبية والحياة الاجتماعية في الشرق الأوسط العرق والتمييز العنصري الأفكار والحركات السياسية في الشرق الأوسط.

فسر المثقف البريطاني الكبير إرنست غلنر نموذج المجتمعات الإسلامية تفسيراً جامعاً، فرأى بالاستفادة من الخلدونية، بعد تحديثها، أنها قابلة للتحليل بلغة سوسيولوجية مشتركة: سوسيولوجيا ديالكتيك المدينة والقبيلة، حيث لكل منهما شكله الخاص من الدين، فيما تعود الهيمنة المدينية إلى علماء يقودون جماعة ذات مصالح مشركة، ترتكز على النص والقانون الإلهي.
في هذا الاصطفاف يكون الحاكم السياسي مكشوفاً على الدوام لتهديد مزدوج: من القبائل الواقفة على الأبواب، ومن المجتمع المديني الذي لا يعترف أبداً اعترافاً كاملاً بشرعية الحكم.
وفي المقابل تذهب هذه المناقشة النقدية لغلنر إلى أن من الخطأ الاعتقاد بأن مفاهيم ومقولات كـ"العلماء"، ثوابت سوسيولوجية أو سياسية. فالسياقات السياسية الاجتماعية، بحسب سامي زبيدة، تنيط بها معاني وأدواراً مختلفة. أما الإسلاموية الحديثة فإيديولوجيا سياسية متميزة تماماً عن أي شيء سابق في التاريخ الإسلامي.
إن محاور هذه المناقشة بالغة الحرارة والراهنية عربياً، لاتصالها بمسائل الدين والدولة والمدينة والحداثة، فضلاً عن مسألة النهج.
