شهدت السياحة في الآونة الأخيرة طفرة في نوعية جديدة ألا وهي السياحة البيئية، التي تعتمد على عوامل جذب طبيعية وبيئية، ففضلاً عن السائحين الذين يقضون عطلاتهم بشكل تقليدي، ظهر قطاع آخر يفضل قضاء عطلاته بشكل جديد يحقق لهم فرصة الإبتعاد عن زحام وضوضاء الحياة الحديثة والتمتع بجمال ونقاء الطبيعة، وبثراء مناظرها وأحيائها البرية والنباتية.
حيث تعطي أهمية علمية وإقتصادية وإجتماعية لمناطق نائية ذات جذب سياحي قد تكون غير معروفة لدى الكثير، مما يدفع الدول إلى الإهتمام بها وتطويرها، وتدفع الأجهزة الحكومية والقطاع الخاص للإستثمار فيها وفق ضوابط تضمها الدولة لضمان التنمية المستدامة وحماية الموارد البيئية والحفاظ على التنوع الإيكولوجي والحيوي وتوفير فرص عمل للمجتمع المحلي، ومورداً لتدفق النقد الأجنبي، وتحفيز صناعات أخرى ترتبط بشكل مباشر وغير مباشر بهذا القطاع.
كما تتجلى أهميتها في كيفية لفت أنظار أصحاب القرار والباحثين في مجال السياحة والعامل وقد ساهمت السياحة البيئية السليمة في تنشيط الإقتصاد الوطني في كثير من الدول، فضلاً عن دورها في المحافظة على الموارد الطبيعية، بمعنى آخر يمكن للسياحة البيئية أن توفر تمويلاً ذاتياً مستثمراً يعود مردوده بالفائدة على إدارة وتطوير الموارد الطبيعية لمنفعة الإنسان.
ويبدو أن السياحة البيئية قد صارت ضرورة ملحة في الدول المتحضرة والنامية على حد سواء في ظل الطفرة الصناعية والتطور التكنولوجي الذي صاحبته آثار جانبية كثيرة تمثلت في التلوث البيئي بكافة أشكاله وإنكماش المساحات الخضراء والتنمية العشوائية وتقلص المتنفسات الطبيعية التي يحتاج إليها الإنسان، الأمر الذي ساعد على الهروب من منفرات المدينة إلى أحضان الريف والطبيعة.
