يعد إقليم كوردستان العراق جزءاً من الحوض النفطي الكبير الذي يغطي مساحة شاسعة من أراضي الدولة، ويقع هذا الحوض في شمال العراق، ويبلغ مساحته الإجمالية حوالي 85.964 ألف كم2، وهو ما يعادل %19 من إجمالي مساحة العراق، والتي تبلغ نحو 437.072 ألف كم2، ويوجد النفط في كوردستان العراق في أماكن واسعة تمتد من الشمال الغربي لإقليم كوردستان العراق إلى الجنوب الشرقي.
وقد ظهرت ينابيع النفط على سطح الأرض في العديد من المواقع على إمتداد الحزام النفطي في كوردستان ومنها ينابيع (مندلي، طوزخورماتو، باباكركر، القيارة)، كذلك مثلث الحدود الدولية بين العراق وتركيا وسوريا، ويظهر النفط في المنطقة على شكل شريط متقطع تقع على إمتداده الرشوحات النفطية، كذلك سفوح الجبال وأعماق الوديان في المناطق الجبلية مثل (قنديل بخمة، كلي قيرك، شيخان، مقلوب)، إضافة إلى إمتزاج النفط مع المياه الجوفية التي تخرج على شكل ينابيع في العديد من المواقع على إمتداد الحزام النفطي في كوردتسان بفعل خصوصياته، وإختلافات التراكيب الجيولوجية للقشرة الأرضية في هذه مناطق التي ساعدت على سهولة تسرب المواد الهيدروكربونية.
وقد يظهر النفط أو بالقرب من سطح الأرض عن طريق الشقوق الموجودة في التراكيب الجيولوجية وتشكل إحتياطياً إستراتيجياً هائلاً لحقول النفط والغاز في كوردستان.
